Heritage of UNESCO. Sanctuary of Itsukushima

Today we tell about the Japanese Itsukushima shrine. A Shinto shrine is located on the island of Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. This interesting architectural masterpiece is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

First sanctuary was built in the VI century in honor of the three daughters of the god Susanoo no Mikoto, who was considered to protect seafarers.

Throughout history, the structure of the complex was repeatedly destroyed. The sanctuary, which has come down to our days, was built in the XVI century.
