Students from St. Petersburg became the champions of the prestigious championship on programming


      Today in St. Petersburg announced the winners of the 37th World Championships of the Student Programming Association for Computing Machinery (ACM ICPC). They were three students of the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (SPbNIU IFMO).

       Known as the "Battle of the Brains» (Battle of Brains), the final of the prestigious international event brought together 120 teams that competed for the title of the most resourceful experts in programming. Championship took St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (SPbNIU IFMO), the team which won the final in 2012 in Warsaw. 

      Participants of the competition to be shown in-depth knowledge of key trends and opportunities for application of analytical techniques to process more data - one of the key driving forces of the modern economy, and career opportunities in the IT field. IFMO team decided 10 of the 11 tasks in five hours, demonstrating an exceptional level of professional skills and the ability to quickly solve complex problems. 

      Champions of the programming will return home with the award and the honorary title of the most resourceful experts in programming among students all over the world, as well as prizes and scholarships from IBM and a guaranteed offer of employment or internship in a corporation. Apart from participating in the championship, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the latest developments of the laboratory IBM Research & Development Labs and network with leading international experts in the field of information technology, and also took part in excursions to attractions of St. Petersburg, the Hermitage and the Peter and Paul Fortress.

       Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the University of Tokyo and the National Taiwan University ranked second, third and fourth place, respectively, and received a gold medal.        Perm State University (Bronze Medal, 13th place) in the final of ACM ICPC participation of 120 teams who won the regional competition, held last fall. Initially, the selection was conducted among 300,000 students of information technology. At the regional level came a record number of finalists: 29,479 participants from 2,322 universities of the 91st country competed in 300 different venues across 6 continents in order to get one of the 120 invitations to the championship final in St. Petersburg.
