AMD will take Mantle environment on Linux


Advanced Micro Devices plans to give users the ability to Linux-quality gaming, porting software suite Mantle on an open operating system. Recall that the Mantle is a set of tools for developers, which allows to make the game more realistic and productive. He was presented to AMD last year as a response to Microsoft DirectX. Around 50 games have already been developed or are under development using Mantle. Currently Mantle works only on x86-processors and only in Windows. 

Now AMD say they want to expand the sphere of influence Mantle including on Linux. Richard Huddy, an expert on the game software in AMD, said that the company now deals with independent game developers, to understand their needs and wishes. In the near future, AMD will create a team of programmers porting Mantle on Linux. Additionally, Mantle may work for some varieties consoles Steam Machine, created on the basis Steam OS and concept of Valve. 

"For some possibilities Mantle Steam may also be useful. Now we are creating high-performance software layer Mantle for Steam », - says Huddy. If AMD will be able to port Mantle on Linux, the company will automatically be able to sell more graphics cards for Linux-PC and consoles Steam. AMD has said that Mantle will improve the performance of games such as Battlefield 4, Thief, and others.

 AMD has said that Mantle will offer an open API, but until Mantle-access tools largest publishers of games and it is unclear when they will become available to the general public. Today, a significant portion of games written for Windows and DirectX 11 games and then ported to the OpenGL Linux. Porting from DirectX to OpenGL, it usually takes a month and a half.
