European research network GEANT broken up to 2 Tb / s
Scientists from the European Union, working with a research network GEANT, since yesterday received a proper disposal of the updated network trunks and equipment and the transfer of the main networks supporting data rates of up to 2 Tb / s. GEANT is a super-fast pan-European research network, which is engaged in the research, for example, in the search for the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider. In addition, during the so-called Arab Spring in Egypt GEANT was the only online channel for the country.
As reported by the European Commission, the update of network resources began in September 2012 and coordinated by DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe), which has 41 commercial and scientific organization. At the core of the network is updated optical platform Infinera DTN-X, deployed on core networks GEANT.
It has a total length of 8592 km fiber, 35 universal routers that have the network capacity to 2 Tbit / s. The main network routes are concentrated between Amsterdam and Frankfurt. said in a statement the European Commission today superfast network channels available to members of a pool of European NREN (National Research and Education Networks), which includes 32 000 universities, 22,000 schools, libraries, museums, national archives and hospitals.
The core network support for guaranteed data rate of 100 Gbit / s. Due to achieve faster speeds, it is possible to transmit large volumes of scientific data, accelerating the large European research projects. Investment in network upgrades have made 402 million dollars.
