Japanese chip maker Renesas closes another plant due to losses
Japanese chipmaker Reneses Electronics today announced its plans to close the plant, engaged in production of LSI-chip for Nintendo game consoles and other consumer electronics. The factory is located in the Japanese prefecture Tsuruoka, in the north of the country. Renesas originally intended to sell the plant, but has not found a buyer. Total to date there are more than 1,000 people, but the plant itself is not profitable , as manufacturers of cameras, consoles, and other electronics are in a difficult situation against competition from producers smartphones and tablets. To offset costs Renesas will get 150 billion yen from the Japanese state-owned Innovation Network Corp at the end of September. According to Renesas, the company after the closing of the plant will focus on microcontrollers for automotive electronics, where the manufacturer has a strong presence. Earlier, Renesas has decided to combine its business with the LSI-similar units of Panasonic and Fujitsu, but the partners have not agreed on the final terms of the joint venture.
