Microsoft will change its name SkyDrive storage service

Microsoft is preparing to rename its SkyDrive cloud storage service after the company lost a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation British Sky Broadcasting, which in June announced that Sky-compatible brands in Europe and the United States belong just to them in the name of SkyDrive violates the rights of BSkyB. Earlier, Microsoft was forced to give up the name for its Metro interface, after its rights to this trademark told German retailer Metro AG.

Now a British court came to the conclusion that SkyDrive is really at odds with the trademarks of BSkyB. At Microsoft, as is traditionally the case in such cases, initially said they would appeal the court's decision, but later said they plan to change the name for its service. In a statement issued today said that the decision of the court at the same time Microsoft and BSkyB settled mutual claims against each other. Under the agreement, Microsoft will change the name of the service, while BSkyB removes all claims without demanding financial compensation.

In addition, the parties agreed that the storage service will be renamed not immediately, but over a "reasonable period of time" to be able to carry out a smooth transition to the new system for users of the service. BSkyB said in a statement that the company is pleased with the progress with Microsoft agreement, as well as the fact that the software giant has refused to appeal. In turn, Microsoft has stated that the change in name does not affect the operation of the service and the millions of users of the product should not experience any significant inconvenience. As Microsoft did not say when exactly the service will be renamed.
