Russia opposed the creation of the Antarctic reserves


      Moscow has called into question the legitimacy of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance in the creation of protected areas. Environmentalists say the missed a unique opportunity to stand up for the Antarctic. Russia has once again opposed the creation of the world's two largest marine protected areas in Antarctica. During the extraordinary meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), which was held in Bremerhaven, Germany, Russia on Tuesday, July 16, refused to discuss the issue. Moscow has called into question the legitimacy of an intergovernmental organization of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance (AAO), reports AFP.

       Decision on the establishment of protected areas in Antarctica was not accepted, and last fall. For its part, the program manager for the conservation of biodiversity of WWF Vladimir Krever said that at the last meeting of the Commission of Russia posed a number of questions regarding the feasibility of establishing protected areas in Antarctica.
